About the local area. PDF Print E-mail
Milford Haven is the estuary part of the Daugleddau river, which in turn is an amalgamation of the East and West Cleddau rivers. The Haven nestles in and under the protection of the Pembrokeshire coastal National park. An important breeding area for marine bird life, the stark natural beauty of the area is enhanced by their presence.

The islands of Skokholm and Skomer have the largest Shearwater population in the world. Puffins are a common sight and at night the Shearwaters come into their nest burrows. The nearby island of Grassholm boasts the second largest gannetry in the North Atlantic.

The waters around the islands are best described as challenging. Swift tides and overfalls abound, but the scenery and wildlife make the trouble well worthwhile. Rudders, being approx. 10 miles from the mouth of the estuary is ideally placed for day sails to the islands.
